What has been happening recently at                                          ?

The Good Things

oNew IT set up, equipment and training for staff and senior students, thanks to the hard work of some young volunteers from the UK

oStrong Leadership Team that has been in place since July 2008

oGreatly increased numbers of girls in all the schools thanks to the Women’s Project

oGreater awareness, on the part of the girls, of their potential to achieve equally with the boys thanks to the Girl Power Group

oMany new strong partnerships between EducAid schools and schools in the UK, Spain and New Zealand to name but a few...

The Hard Things

EducAid has lost six students since March 2008 largely through very poor health care provision and lack of understanding of basic health issues on the part of the general population.

Our tertiary students have frequent encounters with corruption in the higher institutions.  One has even been excluded from the College of Medicine with no explanation of his failure or transparency about his genuine standard despite several attempts to clarify the situation.

The global financial crisis and the crash in the value of sterling has meant food prices have shot up in Sierra Leone while the pound has lost one third of its value in the last year.  Nearly all our fund-raising is done in sterling.  We anticipate a shortfall of £70,000 and are facing serious cutbacks.

Mohamed Kargbo [RIP] Good Friday, 10th April 2009

This photo of Mohamed Kargbo was taken as he arrived in Magbeni, the beginning of his life with EducAid.  I took the photo so that he would have it as a momento to look back to the start of a new life.  He never saw the photo!
