Mohamed Sannoh

Mohamed Sannoh is one of EducAid’s longest standing students, having joined us at approximately ten years old, over twelve years ago.  Initially, we paid his fees at Albert Academy.  This was before EducAid had its own school.  After some time, he joined EducAid and finished his senior secondary schooling with us.

A tenacious young man, despite being advised not to expect EducAid to be able to sponsor him through to university, he taught other youngsters for a fee and gathered enough money to buy the application form and got himself in to Fourah Bay College.

What to do now?  Our longest standing student, who considered EducAid as his only family, had, against all the odds, got himself into the highest institution in the land!

Happily, we did in the end find a sponsor for him and he set the precedent we had been avoiding!

However, we are indeed very proud of him.  He qualifies this year with an accounting degree and will pursue further ACCA studies to equip himself fully for the profession.

Accountants with integrity - a valuable commodity in these parts!

Mohammed Sannoh's Story

Recorded 23 June 2005, Kenema, Sierra Leone

Mohammed’s story is recorded here as he told it, more or less. The recording wasn’t great quality but these are his words as far as I can get them down. It begins in his village of Luwma, just three miles from the Liberian border, where he lived with his family.

Mohamed’s story so touched Mark Wallace that he also wrote a piece for the Catholic Herald:

In 2005 Mohamed returned for the first time in 16 years to his village of origin.  Nobody whose name he remembered was still alive but he discovered cousins and family members he did not know existed at all.

There were few dry eyes in the village that day!
